Afritrack

IoT | Tanzania

What they do:

Afritrack offers innovative tracking and monitoring solutions through the use of IoT-connected devices and on-cloud data analytics, providing actionable intelligence to businesses, giving them a competitive edge through database-driven decision making and predictive analysis, as well as improvement on their operational efficiencies and reduction in risks

Why we invested:

African countries are stepping up on compliance and regulation driving the adoption of IoT. The IoT demand also correlates with insecurity and pilferage. Transit cargo is expected to remain via road for foreseeable future and hence vehicle tracking services/solutions.

Most alternative solutions are limited to tracking and asset retrieval services, with inadequate value-add in terms of data analytics and actionable intelligence. These alternatives are mostly based outside of Africa with limited penetration on the continent due to insufficient ground support and higher price (about 4x the price).

Founding Team:

Suhail Sheriff is the Managing Director. Suhail is a self-taught entrepreneur who began with little capital. He earned his Masters degree in International Development from Cornell University in 2000 and headed back to Zanzibar where he co-founded Zanlink, an internet company. Zanlink was successfully sold to Liquid Telecom in 2016 at a 20x return. Suhail has worked for Internet companies for over 20 years including Raha (now Liquid) and SimbaNet (now Wananchi Group). In 2006 he founded Afritrack, an Internet of Things (IoT) company, which he rejoined in 2018 to help grow and scale the business.

Ashraf Mukri is the General Manager. Ashraf joined Afritrack in 2017, as an employee, working towards earning shares in the company. In his tenure, he has built Afritrack’s sales, customer service and support teams, and earned his seat on the Board of Directors. With Ashraf in the lead, Afritrack’s turnaround strategy has pivoted to compete in the regional market with global players; winning it accolades, increasing its customer base across Africa and building the Afritrack brand as a trusted IoT provider offering actionable intelligence-based solutions.
